Café with packaged cakes

I would like to ask why more and more often there are public places which sells coffee and cakes, but the cakes are not freshly baked, but just taken out from the freezer and warmed up. Not only: you could buy the same cake at the supermarket - paying of course less than half the price.

I agree that the atmosphere of a little café with nice music, confortable chairs, nice view, is most often something else than the own living room or kitchen. And that, only because you are out of your home, you feel different - detached, or away from the usual daily life, or maybe just lost in the foreign place. But still, why is there less and less the offer of not only a particular ambient but also of food that you can find only there, or at least in few places. It is difficult to say that with drinks, because you can find teas and coffees and chocolate in almost every place that is meant for the afternoon after-work or mid-morning guests. But: cakes?
There is a new café in one of the biggest book shop of downtown. Advertising the opening, it mentioned the fancy cakes and fresh muffins. So, today I tried it. I discovered that they sell packed cakes and warm up a slice after you order it. Well, not quite the same. I even recognized some of the branches, although I am not an expert.
I thought about the cakes and muffins of other little cafés in town, everyday different, depending on the season when using fresh fruits. I wonder why people would prefer for the same price a packed piece of cake that they could get at the supermarket. Maybe because they know what they get, no surprises. If someone invests the money, then he wants to be sure that he'll like it. So that everything tastes in the same way everywhere. No risk.
Or, people just don't taste. They eat whatever.
Or, people don't have the time to check a nice place where to eat even when they are having a break with a cup of coffe.
These are the only explanations I found. And all mean: small fresh-baking places become rarer - less competitive. That's sad.

It is kind of sarcastic how movements like "Slow food" are developing, but average people just ignore the taste and beauty and health which are related to food which is normal, but properly and freshly cooked. No need to search for who knows which exotic or rare ingredients. Just a home-made cake, that's already so great.
